All of our camps help build girls' leadership and confidence, but with our Leadership camps older girls get a special chance to focus on leadership.
Girls entering grade 10 and above are eligible for Leadership camp, where their summer will be full of hands-on opportunities to grow as leaders, working with younger girls and with full support from experienced camp staff.
What's Leadership Camp All About?
Our Leadership camps are a fun and challenging three-part progression of programs for young women interested in developing leadership skills while having fun in the outdoors. Building these skills helps provide you with a valuable foundation for future academic and career choices, as well as helping grow into a self-confident and well-rounded individual.
The first two levels of the program offer you the chance to focus on specific interest areas, so you'll be able to tailor the experience to reflect your interests. Check out the other tabs to learn more about the Leadership camp options available today!
Level 1: Grades 10-11
Outdoor Leader (formerly Olaves)
Work with your group to analyze what makes a good leader and participate in fun and challenging group games. Challenge yourself physically and mentally on a high ropes course and identify the traits you possess that can make you a positive leader. Learn about group functioning and facilitating group dynamics and observe camp staff, gaining firsthand experience. You will also focus on outdoor skills, developing a strong foundation for outdoor leadership. All locations.
Wilderness Leadership
Grow your wilderness experience by backpacking and canoeing for 3-4 days each. Work on menu planning, wilderness reflection, map and compassing, and gear needs for multiple adventures and environments. Through daily leadership roles and responsibilities in the wilderness you will have a unique opportunity to learn more about your personal leadership style. You will become a Leave No Trace trainer and lead a younger group of campers on an overnight at the end of your program. Participants must be physically fit, able to paddle and trek with gear for up to 8 miles a day, and have basic understanding of outdoor gear. It is highly recommended that participants research Leave No Trace Principles prior to coming to this program. Camp Robbinswold only. Grades 10-12.
Cowgirls
Explore your personal leadership style and what makes a good leader while working with wranglers, gaining knowledge about horse care, behavior and proper riding techniques. You’ll groom and tack your own horse, go on trail rides and become more confident at the trot and lope. When not working with horses, participate in fun and challenging group games and learn about group functioning and facilitating group dynamics. Shadow experienced camp staff and build a strong foundation for understanding leadership dynamics in a horse camp setting. Camp River Ranch only.
Level 2: Grades 11-12
Level 2 requires an application and interview before acceptance into the program. The registration deadline is April 15; the application deadline is May 1 (the application will be sent to you once you register). Levels 2 and 3 will have a break mid-session when campers will return home.
Counselor-in-Training (CIT) (formerly Juliettes)
Focus on the skills needed to work with children at camp. Learn about common camper behaviors and how to manage them. Gain expertise in creating programming and providing progression in the camp environment. You will have the opportunity to practice the skills you learn with younger campers and gain valuable insight from working directly with camp staff. Visit two other camps’ CIT programs to observe, collaborate and learn about other types of camp operations. All locations. Prerequisite: Successful completion of any Level 1 program or equivalent.
Wrangler-in-Training (WIT)
Focus on the skills needed to work with younger campers around horses. Build knowledge about horse care and behavior while gaining experience developing age-appropriate lesson plans. You’ll work closely with wranglers and horses every day, gaining hands on experience delivering lessons to campers while under the guidance of experienced staff. Observe and shadow camp staff both in horse country and around camp, learning about group dynamics and practicing your facilitation skills. This program is not for beginning riders. Camp River Ranch only. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 1: Cowgirls or equivalent.
Level 3: Grade 12 or entering college
Level 3 requires an application and interview before acceptance into the program. The registration deadline is April 15; the application deadline is May 1 (the application will be sent to you once you register). Levels 2 and 3 will have a break mid-session when campers will return home.
Internship (Formerly Margarets and Fillies)
The culmination of Leadership Camp, where you get hands on experience practicing the skills you have developed. Complete an intern training then choose the sessions you are available to intern. Ideally, interns will stay the whole summer, but we are aware of scheduling needs. Interns are expected to complete two weeks at camp in addition to training. Our leadership directors will work with you and our camp staff to place you in living units and program areas that will give you a beneficial experience. Daily check-ins with leadership directors and camp staff mentors will help guide you during this internship. All locations. (WIT Intern Training at Camp River Ranch only.) Prerequisite: Successful completion of any Level 1 or 2 Leadership Camp.
